2. Data Collection in Connection with Automated and Connected Test Vehicles

2.1 Research Project Automated Test Vehicle Digitrans eVAN

As part of the research project EVAN – funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (“FFG”) in the 18th Mobility of the Future call – DigiTrans GmbH aims to deploy a highly automated (autonomously driving) vehicle on Austria’s roads. This allows for the development of one of the most advanced research and test vehicles for automated driving, which will be used both nationwide and internationally.

To enable highly automated driving, the use of various sensors is necessary. In this project, optical sensors (e.g., cameras on and in the vehicle) are used among others for environmental detection and collision avoidance. Here, personal data are collected and processed as natural persons and vehicle license plates can be captured.
The data collected are used exclusively for the purposes of the research project and are stored only as long as necessary for the achievement of the project’s purposes (until the end of the project or according to the retention periods § 2f paragraph 3 no. 1 FOG) and then anonymized or deleted. The data are exclusively exchanged within the project with project partners and not transmitted to third parties.

2.2 Research Project AWARD H2020 – Automated Goods Transport

DigiTrans GmbH, in collaboration with 29 international project partners, is working on a research project funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under Grant Agreement No. 101006817.

In the EU H2020 project AWARD, a highly automated electric transporter will operate between two companies on a route, where normally a conventional truck would run, in Gunskirchen until 2023 – regardless of whether it rains, snows, is sunny or foggy.

The project partners observe the applicable data protection regulations during data processing and commit themselves and their employees in particular to ensure appropriate technical and organizational measures, to handle data protection incidents carefully, and to maintain data secrecy according to § 6 DSG. Each responsible party is responsible for (i) fulfilling the obligation to inform according to Articles 13 and 14 GDPR, (ii) keeping a processing register, (iii) cooperating with the local supervisory authorities, (iv) notifying affected persons about potential high-risk data protection incidents, and (v) appointing a data protection officer.
